Wall drawings by Mariano Ferrante, Julián Terán and Igancio Valdez

Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires currently has three large-scale wall drawings by Mariano Ferrante, Julián Terán and Igancio Valdez installed throughout the museum.

These wall drawings are interesting because they are placed in what are normally the non-art spaces of this institution, for example in the corridors between galleries or on the landing area at the top of a staircase.

Unlike a regular painting on canvas or drawing on paper, which generally functions as an independent object, the placement of these drawings directly on the wall and in the “in between” spaces of the museum, engages these spaces specifically. For example, a viewer would likely notice the height of the wall that the drawing is on, where the windows are in relation to it, and the difficulty of viewing Terán’s work from the front because it is beside a staircase.

This specific engagement with the spaces in which the drawings exist, point back to the viewer, and in the process ask them to be engaged with the artwork, to ask questions about the space of the museum and what distinguishes art and architecture.
